We first meet Richard Harrow when Jimmy Darmody visits the VA Hospital. At the hospital, Jimmy gets a glimpse of Richard’s face without the mask. It is horrifying. Half of Richard’s face has been blown away in WWI. One side of Richard’s face is just his actual skull. It is almost unbelievable to think he survived whatever inflicted that kind of injury.
In order to help Richard function normally in society, he must wear a clumsy tin mask that has been painted and shaped to resemble his face. Richard’s mask is almost as off-putting as his disfigurement. And yet there is something painfully compelling about the mask as well. At times the mask seems to just be a hair off from perfectly aligning with Richard’s face. Other times, the mask seemed to be as expressive as a real face would be. The lucky owner will absolutely treasure this extra special creation from Richard Harrow in Boardwalk Empire.
